The Gadsden Primitive Baptist Church of Gadsden, Alabama hosted a Conference on the English Bible.

Our objective was to increase appreciation for the Scriptures and for the men and women the Lord used to make them available in our native language. A partial list of presentations includes:

  • Biographical Sketches – John Wycliffe, William Tyndale, and John Albert Bengel
  • Canonization of the Holy Scriptures
  • Issues in translating the Hebrew and Greek texts
  • Issues in translating into modern languages using Arabic as a case study
  • The history of the English Bible (two sessions, one before and one after 1611)

The keynote speaker of the conference was Dr. George M. Ella from Mülheim, Germany. Dr. Ella is a noted author, scholar, and lecturer. Other speakers included Steve Cowan from the Apologetics Resource Center in Birmingham and local pastors and ministers from the Gadsden area.

To give a hands-on sense of our Bible’s history, we have partnered with the Gadsden Museum of Art to display a significant collection of historically significant and interesting Bibles collected by the Gadsden Primitive Baptist Church. This display will be open from July 3 to August 19, with a special Grand Opening even during the conference. Descriptions will accompany each Bible. A complete facsimile of the 1455 Gutenberg Bible—the first book ever printed on a printing press—will be featured. This is only the second complete reproduction ever produced. Admission to the exhibit is free.

As an added bonus, another very special exhibit was available during our conference. The Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts will be hosting an exhibit called Ink and Blood: Dead Sea Scrolls to Gutenberg, including a working model of the original Gutenberg press. There is an admission fee for this exhibit.
